In 2007, California's DARPA Urban Challenge tasked eleven 'robot' cars with safely driving sixty miles alongside human-controlled vehicles-entirely free from people keeping things under control behind the wheel. It was the first competition of its kind, and thanks to robust human programming, all of the cars were able to complete the task to ample praise.
