@samusisawesome: You lose the voices of bigots or you lose the voices of decent people. Decide who is more important to you and act accordingly.

Alright, time to speak up. I've run a forum that I created over 15 years ago now. I've seen on the micro level what bigger sites deal with on the macro. And what I have seen is that you contain / get rid of bigots or decent people leave because they're sick of all the bigots.

This thing that some people keep arguing for where you just do the complete "free speech" and then all ideas have a space... sorry, it doesn't exist. You lose the voices of bigots or you lose the voices of decent people. Decide who is more important to you and act accordingly.

Good people would disappear from my site and we were all pretty close so I'd still have other ways to contact them. I'd be like... what's up? Why did you leave? And for a lot of them the answer was a few key spots of bigotry that I did an admittedly poor job of containing.

You can just let anything go and call it free speech or whatever you want to. But you can't pretend that it leads to a freer exchange of great ideas. People will leave. And the people who leave will have, honestly, more important ideas than the bigots and their boring ones.

By letting bigots thrive on your platform you are driving out non-bigots, many of which would theoretically have had a lot of compelling, interesting things to add to the conversations, and now they're gone. And to protect what exactly? Bigots have jack shit to add.

Of course, the people who argue that you should let the bigots stay usually aren't really doing it for "free speech", they're doing it because they relate to the ideas of the bigots on some level and are worried they might be next. Oh well.

Look at places like 8chan, gab, etc. that are all about letting anything go. What truly compelling conversations are happening there if you're not a bigot? It's nonsense to claim those are the best places for free exchange of ideas.

Often these types will argue that the people who left are "snowflakes" so it's no big loss. It's a dumb argument, but also telling. They don't actually value all voices like they claim. They value the voices of bigots over the voices of "snowflakes".

Anyway, I don't really have much to add to this rant. That's it. Make your decision. But you can't have it all.
