“A BuzzFeed analysis found that the 20 top-performing fake election stories, led by the lie that the Pope had endorsed Donald Trump, gained more reactions, shares, and comments than the 20 top-performing stories from 19 major news outlets in the last three months of the campaign (Facebook said the stories represented a tiny part of total news consumption on the platform). The fake stories were overwhelmingly partisan, playing to Facebook’s tendency to extend the reach of content that elicits extreme reactions.”
