I have a lukewarm take.
Twitter is weaponized propaganda. It encourages folks to create headline sensationalism in 280 characters without the explanation of an article. It is to be accepted as fact and then shared in seconds without regard for truth or accuracy.
When Jonathan Swift wrote "Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it, so that when men come to be undeceived, it is too late; the jest is over, and the tale hath had its effect[.]" he could never have imagined how true we would make this.
We live in an era of mass zeitgeist, where people are more likely to simply see a position stated as fact and, regardless of whether they agree or disagree with it, immediately spread it to the four corners of the Earth with little due diligence.
I have no solution or proposal in relation to this. There really is none. It is a new reality of this era we live in. Instantaneous reaction is the new norm without contemplation.
On some things we can react without consideration. Racism, bigotry, pure wrongs.
On others, on things that are not pure wrongs, perhaps contemplation or investigation is necessary, though no longer required.
I dunno. I'm a lawyer. Not a sociologist.
I just know it worries me a bit.
And yep, I know I'm as guilty of it as everyone else.
I tried to search for a piece of information today and watched the ticker scroll by and wanted to say "Jesus, just retweet the damn article not the 10,000 takes with your own take." Then I realized I do the same thing.
I mean...Headlines are meant to be eyecatching. They're meant to sell something.
But then they're supposed to provide context and information after catching your eye.
Twitter seems to me to be a platform of headlines most of the time.
....How many of you assholes are retweeting this without even glancing at the remainder of the thread?
Agree with me or not, YOU'RE THE GODDAMN PROBLEM.
I could literally say anything after that first statement.
For all you know, the rest of this is about eating children.
