Before discussing *(LISTEN)*, a note on Max Neuhaus.
Trained as a classically jazz drummer, Neuhaus played immensely technically works for the likes of Xenakis before frustratedly exiting music. Neuhaus then went on to stage works, like *LISTEN*, which sought to subvert conventional "ownership" of sound by experimenting with environmental and networked sound practices.
In 1966 [Max Neuhaus](https://www.are.na/sam-hart/neuhaus-hear-inc) first staged his piece [*LISTEN*](http://www.max-neuhaus.info/soundworks/vectors/walks/LISTEN/), a series of sound walks—the first of which took place near his studio in the Lower East Side.
Most of his walks were promoted by word-of-mouth and enigmatic messaging like this post card.
