"i was hiking a few weeks ago, you know about that, right? “hiking”? well, i was hiking and i was coming up to the top of this mountain at about 900 or so feet and i was standing there midday the wind still and the smokey fall smells hanging against the high air and there was a burst of light strobing from the sky for a moment and just then it was a few hours later and my clothes were all burned off and it was foggy out. i climbed down naked from the mountain on all fours because when you are in the woods and you are naked you must be on all fours or else God rejects you sputtering from the earth and when i got to the bottom my car was broken into and all of my cassette tapes were stolen but not my walkman, you know about that, right? “walkman”? well, i came home from the mountains and the whole drive was misty and the roads were dewy slick and so i drove home as a worm with a sleeping bag pulled up over me navigating the pedals through the high scratching sound of the fabric against fabric on my feet. i stuffed my lip with tobacco and i drove. i got home and showered myself out of that cold and dressed myself and that is the end of that part. now here is the next part the next part is that i have been growing smaller and smaller every day by larger and larger exponents, you know about that, right? “exponents”? well, i have been measuring myself and i am sure that i started december 5 feet and 10 inches tall and now it is the next month after that one called january and i am 5 feet and 6 inches now and no one is saying anything to me about it or saying as much as I they were or noticing that or anything and what i mean is it’s amazing to be a shrinking woman when all the time you seem to be growing bigger and bigger against the horizon states away and soon the army will begin their first offensive against your feet and i just wanted to tell you to lean, please, lean east to pennsylvania and pick me up so that when i’m small enough you can inject me or else swallow me like a pill”
"Access to knowledge is the superb, the supreme act of truly great civilizations. Of all the institutions that purport to do this, free libraries stand virtually alone in accomplishing this."
“The problem of—or the relationship between—surpluses of labor, capital, land, and state capacity in times of crisis. And how these surpluses have been organized into prisons when other kinds of organizational solutions have always been available. Always. There was never a time when these surpluses of finance, capital, land, labor, and state capacity could not have been organized differently. Right, they could have been. There is nothing inevitable about prison growth in the United States.”
“Disposition is something for which there can only be dynamic or indeterminate markers. Disposition is looking at not the shape of the game piece but the way the game piece plays; not what is printed on the fabric but how the fabric floats; not the master plan of the field but how the field changes. The markers we use in all those cases are—and this sounds contradictory—the markers that we use are indeterminate to be practical. It is, maybe to borrow from Gilbert Ryle, about knowing how instead of knowing that.”
