Lots of interesting ideas here.

  • Solar powered server means some likely downtime. Leads to pages like "When is the best time to visit the site?" that shows the weather forecast in the coming days.

  • Use system fonts (to save energy) and a graphic identity that's decoupled from a specific typeface:
    LOW←TECH MAGAZINE

  • Black-and-white dithered images that are multiplied onto colors in the browser to denote different types of articles. Ends up looking cool/unique/consistent across site and makes the images tiny.

  • Subtle battery meter overlay on top of whole site

  • Site design ends up perfectly embodying its own message: simplicity, efficiency, utility. At the same time, it has a lot of character and doesn't just look web 2.0
