Freelance a great thing if your popular. Freelancing is a great thing to do while your already working. Allows for someone to find you for your skills or style rather that working for company. If your someone who like to work at there own pace or likes to pick and choose what they are working on freelancing is for you. The down side to freelancing is the unstable income if you don’t have a steady flow of work coming in. All in all being a freelance designer is something every designer should try. Everyone’s got a a little time to take a on side project and who doesn’t like side money. Right.
Making passive income is a great thing to be doing as a designer. It allows for potential exposure and future clients. There are many forms of passive income some of the one that I feel are the Most effective are creating things and selling assets like website templates, textures, icons, etc. there are a lot of ways to make money while you sleep as a designer. Opening up a small web-store with a third party site like society6 for example. It really comes down to figuring out what you have fun making the most and turning that into your passive income.
When it come to pricing a service as a graphic designer we all run in to the struggling of how much do I charge someone. Do you changer by hour or do you charge a flat rate? A simple way I look at it is how much is the service worth to the company. You wouldn’t charge a mom and pop shop the same price and a Fortune 500 company. So we looks the value of said service to the company. Another thing is being confident in the price you set. The less risk you are to a company the better you look to them. Anyone can ask for 10k for brand strategy but it’s the ones who are confident and understand that a company is more than just a store.
