An autopoietic machine is a machine organized (defined as a unity) as a network of processes of production (transformation and destruction) of components which:
(i) through their interactions and transformations continuously regenerate and realize the network of processes (relations) that produced them; and
(ii) constitute it (the machine) as a concrete unity in space in which they (the components) exist by specifying the topological domain of its realization as such a network. — Humberto Maturana
Core Structure v0.1
Simplicity (single step > multi step)
Focus primarily on atomic actions.
Understand, leverage gravity.
Where possible, view life through The Objective Lens
Embrace probability, ignore determinism.
Always ask "why?"
Develop, follow simple rules
Favor emergent systems (life will trend towards complexity. There's no need for you to add any more wood to the bonfire)
Appeal to self-interests
Unshackle the mind from black and white reasoning.
Observe, understand the mass of "objects" (in habit forming, in decision making, of social groups, etc.)
In summary, rather than learning by replicating the performance of others or by acquiring knowledge transmitted in instruction, we suggest that learning occurs through centripetal participation in the learning curriculum of the ambient community. Because the place of knowledge is within a community of practice, questions of learning must be addressed within the developmental cycles of that community, a recommendation which creates a diagnostic tool for distinguishing among communities of practice.
I have no idea how to achieve "planetary thought". It must be impossible if we restricted ourselves to using only our unaided cognition. We simply have not evolved to perceive and think beyond our immediate space and time.
And so any successful practice of Planetary Thought must rely on augmenting our cognition through tools and systems, but this isn't surprising. We have been doing it for thousands of years, and have many precedents.
More interesting, perhaps, is how we might develop cognitive exercises to help reshape parts of our brain without need for external aids. This, too, has many precedents.
Hypothetically, achieving a "pure form" of "planetary thought" may necessitate discarding or de-prioritizing much of which makes us recognizably human, today: conformity only to social timescales, a single, life-long name and identity bound by a geographic, bordered birth and an ethnic heritage, an apolitics, or moving beyond a left/right politics, non-consumerist modes of operating, a greater emphasis on infinite games, etc.
This class will be oriented mostly around questions and conversations, as any practice this radical can only emerge collaboratively through the contributions of many.
