As for making music, the most important aspects are contemplative lyrics, ambient sounds, and above all else, authenticity. A music production software like GarageBand or Ableton is necessary in order to record and clean up music. A condenser microphone is standard but you have to keep in mind that the emotion is always going to outweigh the technical shortcomings or resources. Releasing music on SoundCloud & YouTube is the most straightforward (and free) way to start.
A few days after trying to pull myself together to create more content for HOOPLA, Sarah texted me a demo of a song she had just written and recorded that day. It was exactly what I needed to jump back into things and get myself motivated and inspired again. The song, what we're calling "quarantune," is about navigating life in quarantine. I immediately connected with the lyrics of the song and it reminded me that I wasn't the only one going through this uncertain and unnerving time. The first time I heard it, I could already see the music video playing in my head, full of collage and different styles of animation.
I will be collaborating with my coworkers and friends from Q Prime to turn one of them into a bedroom pop artist. Sarah Hooper, who studied creative writing and music in college, is the perfect candidate. We will reinvent her original songs to fit the sounds of the genre and I will direct the design of her persona. I will lead the design of her entire brand, including an Instagram handle & content, album artwork, and a music video. She will fit perfectly within the realm of the genre with just a touch of an edge to keep her in the category of originality. This project is a critique and an embrace of the genre of bedroom pop; seemingly easy to pull off but authentic enough to influence an entire generation.
We started to use the resources that became available to us during this strange time. We used Zoom for meetings and performances so we could plan the rest of the project. We discussed having an Instagram Live performance to announce the release date and give a sneak peak to "quarantune" since so many artists are doing the same to connect with their fans. I had no idea it would be possible to keep moving forward, but we carried on.
