“Biomedicalization carves a groove in our collective imagination that makes close measurement of the body both conceivable and desirable,” write Neff & Nafus in one of the texts I will use for this course. Currently, we have a wide array of tools and practices - and communities, like quantified self - to draw on. These technical and analytic approaches and intersect with a lot of other societal topics in health; wellness; success; productivity - and these, in turn, are connected to deeply-held personal views. The academic and technical research I will include in each week will explore various forms of difficult data in particular self-tracking settings; the discussions, I hope, will help us to relate the theoretical concepts to our lived values and meanings.
