In Berlin, the way ticketing works is you buy a ticket and an inspector occasionally comes to check if you have a ticket. One of Max’s friends will have a ticket but take a very long time to find it, looking flustered and combing through every pocket “looking for” the ticket. Eventually the ticket is produced, but the process takes so long that the train has arrived at another station, and people who didn’t buy tickets can sneak off.
