It was as if adventure itself had overtaken the idea of adventure and swamped it, and I was overwhelmed by a sense of deep patience, of serenity, not because I felt detached or distant from my disrupted and peculiar life, on the contrary I was absolutely at one with it, and it is this that I realized years later in Russia: adventure amazes me with peace.
