CONSIDER THE SIPHONOPHORE

"This kind of life is entirely incomprehensible to us individual individuals. Because we’re social creatures, we consider ourselves to be close to our families and friends, most of the time. But siphonophores aren’t social creatures, because they’re one creature. The millions of identical twins in the depths of the pelagic can’t love each other like we can - they are each other. We humans feel a loneliness that the siphonophore never will, but the siphonophore feels a loneliness that we humans have escaped simply by existing in this world. Even though there are some people that live in the most remote places in the world, they still are connected with the rest of humanity just by living in the same world we do. These people - they still long for the rest of humanity, or at least think about the people that make up the majority of the Earth. That’s a way of connecting to someone despite such disconnectedness."
