State Theatre Protests
State Theatre Protests

This photo was taken on May 29, 1963, where over 200 students were arrested for protesting the all-white policy of the Florida and State Theatres in downtown Tallahassee.

After their release, the Judge limited the size of protests and prohibited singing during protests. This rule mirrors the slave codes, a set of laws enacted in the South to regulate music. Legislators feared music's power to unify people and communicate routes towards freedom.
