It was that lyrical defender of the desert, Edward Abbey, who most damningly indicted growth for "the sake of growth." This was, Abbey argued, "the ideology of the cancer cell." As he observed, cancer has no purpose. But it does have a consequence: "the death of the host."[1] Growth is the anticipation, the patterned logic, and the secularized religion of capitalism.
