In 1968, the conceptual artist and critic Jack Burnham published an essay entitled 'Systems Esthetics'. Burnham began with an acidic critique of the modernist formalism of the day, championed by the likes of Clement Greenberg and Michael Fried, comparing the artistic contributions of 'formalist invention' to the '"new" car of the automobile stylist'.
