Jer Thorp St Louis

I was specifically interested in the authority that machine-made marks seemed to hold over ones that are made by hand. While it seems like a commonly held belief that machines (robots, computers) make better, more accurate maps, it became clear to the mapmakers in the Map Room that the robots, while certainly precise, had nothing to say about the city. Indeed their ultimate purpose was to do the boring labor of laying the scaffolding for geographic narratives, marking the cross streets and walking paths and public parks so that the real stories of the city could emerge through the much more meaningful marks made by the human hands
