Uric acid (UA) is the end product of purine metabolism in humans, unlike other mammals where UA is metabolized to allantoin by uricase ( Figure 1). The amount of UA in blood depends on the ingestion of purines in the diet, the biosynthesis of UA from endogenous purines and renal balance, where up to 90% of the filtered UA is reabsorbed ( Figure 2).
