School Unrealness

When we mark out a ‘real world’ from within the school, we are implicit in the creation of a binary.

School Unrealness excavates a space for potential and critique within the oppositional ‘real world’ and ‘unreal school’, locating a queer potentiality somewhere in between. The study then works towards proposing an unreal school: the Department of Extension.

Its four essays are threaded together by conversations with Mariana Pestana, Nina Paim, A Parede (Luiza Prado & Pedro Oliveira), Jack Self, Cathy Gale, Tugce Karatas, Prem Krishnamurthy and Kieran O’Connor. Their insights offer additional perspectives on the real/unreal binary and the potential of speculation within design education.
