Devil’s Fingers fungus (Clathrus archeri)
Devil’s Fingers fungus (Clathrus archeri)

The fungus erupts from a white sac or ‘egg’, giving it a disturbing alien appearance. The fungus itself consists of between four to seven fingers. These fingers unfurl to reveal the dark, olive coloured gleba that contains the fungal spores. When the fungus reaches maturity it emits a smell that is similar to putrid flesh.
