We see the purpose of simulation...in application to complex human behavior not in reproducing the whole complexity of reality, but in isolating specific factors that may be pertinent to realistic situations and studying the consequences of individual differences and contextual effects. ABM can be seen as a thought experiment that becomes a feasible strategy in cases when the group-level outcomes are not easily predictable from individual-level associations, and the social systems are too large in scale to be reproduced with any sufficient approximation in real-life experimental settings.
