Pressed flowers gathered in South Africa, arranged in a composition honoring Sol Plaatje's work

Sol Plaatje documented the consequences of the 1913 Natives Land Act in the form of oral histories, sketches and notes; it is believed he also included clippings of plants in his notebook. The pressed flowers in this image have been collected by Wolff Architects, based on readings of Bessie Head’s garden plans, novels and photographs, and also gathered from sites of forced removals in Cape Town.

From Ilze Wolff's 'Home ground: the garden as a site of colonial critique', Architectural Review (19 October 2020).
