Idea: your first event is free; subsequent ones are PWYW…or all are PWYW (depending how many return attendees…)

A hyperspecific, super limited time reading group?

IDEA: not online + offline; rather, goal could be trying different event formats + then building a sort of small event pattern library!

Could share on the website…include ones I've tested (w/ reviews / ratings along various metrics to help you decide which to try on your own) + others that are still ideas or WIP…

Events really should be / maybe even need to be offline…but templates should be shared…open source event templates!

Goals

  • To make space for, and nurture a community of, small events with friends.
  • To get to know people in a real way, and learn and / or make interesting things.
  • To establish a sustainable communal model that relies on gift exchange and patronage.

Considerations

  • Different patterns, structures, affordances etc. for in person vs. online
  • In person events: food; seating / arrangement of physical space; introductions; flex time for breaks, mingling, etc.
  • Online events: scheduling; building in breaks / slack time; variety of communication methods (e.g. video + chat + email); possible tech troubleshooting
  • Both: different ways of focusing / distributing attention (e.g. watching something together, individual presentations / comments, group discussion); icebreakers or other "intimacy shortcuts"; making sure there's some concrete takeaway(s) + means of sharing afterward (closing the loop)

Output

I will host a prototype event, or rather two of them — one online/distributed, one live/intimate — and compare the results, aiming to begin establishing patterns for future events.

I'd like to collect some kind of external exhaust as well i.e. shareable learnings from the event(s).

Guiding Principles

  • Exploratory and open to change / evolution
  • Open; oriented toward sharing, both specific "how to" / lessons, and patterns / principles
  • Inclusive / welcoming, aiming for diversity and exchange of viewpoints, experiences, etc.
  • Learning-focused…social connection by way of collaborative sense making and knowledge-dives
  • Gift economy…donation-based; patronage driven; perhaps floating / rotating "host" duties

Social Axioms

  • It can be really hard to met new people and go deep for meaningful connections and conversation
  • The best learning experiences happen with other people — active, participatory, engaging
  • Fostering a sense of intimacy is key, and often hard to achieve…strangely underutilized mode! Core themes here include: comfort, hospitality, ritual, playfulness…
  • With the right modalities / affordances. a lot of learning and connecting can be compressed into, say, just a few hours (and can disproportionately endure / persist)
  • It's very difficult yet possible to create these kinds of experiences in a remote / online setting (in person is best, but all avenues should be explored)
