when I was younger and the cicadas were particularly loud, my parents used to tell me that cicadas were in the trees making that noise. perhaps they didn't mean literally inside the trees, but in my mind they lived in a hollow, middle part of the tree. it was incongruous with what I knew about trees (not hollow) and I have a vague recollection of wondering how exactly that worked when trees weren't hollow, but somehow I never questioned it and never gave it much thought after.
strange to think I only just learnt that cicadas sit on the bark of the trees after seeing them with my own eyes, rather than inside them lol
