Bazin is not, as some critics have argued, asserting that all art is solely defined by an attempt at immortalising the mortal. But that one of the defining characteristics, or innate motivations, in the production of art and artefacts, be it the mummification of Pharaohs, portraits of Kings and Emperors, is the ‘preservation of life by a representation of life’.3Bazin’s position is that the plastic arts, and I would also assert Bazin’s personal opinion in what makes art attractive, attempts to ‘have the last word in the argument with death by means of the form that endures’.4
Thus, the number 6 in the Bible is all about man and his labor. It signifies man’s shortcomings and the corruption he added into the world created by God.
Kintsugi is interwoven with the philosophy of wabi-sabi, which means “to find beauties in broken things or old things”
With Wabi-Sabi, in terms of how something imperfect can still be beautiful — this is something that I feel like every child is taught in grade school. Even though we’re all different, we are lovely in our own way, etc., repeat ad nauseam.
It’s the idea of Kintsugi that really gives me pause. It means that something broken can be repaired, and that it then becomes more. It becomes far more than it was originally. It becomes stronger. It becomes shinier. It becomes more magnificent because it has been broken.
