Design as a personal, ideological, or political action is important and useful; design as an industry is not. Why train students to be part of an industry? Why not train them to be active parts of the world?

A thought while I was gardening

thus, the meaning is deeply interpersonal. who we are is not simply what we do, what roles we play, or who we think we are "inside." we are woven together into a rich fabric of relatedness. we are constituted and reconstituted through human connection. we risk rejection when we expose the ugliness inside of us, but it's in the embracing of that that we are healed and become who we are; we are reborn. we cannot run away, we will always be confined (consider the intro). we are be liberated from this structural and solipsistic isolation through intimacy--through opening doors, a playful touch, a kiss/hug, through care, vulnerability, and metamorphosis: a bed-ridden subject is given wings to fly. we find our shape through joining; we realize ourselves through others. in doing so, we become something beautiful despite our ugliness--we transform.
