During this time we are seeing a rise of mutual aid and community funding that shows us that there are other ways we can live. We can imagine an art world outside of greed and this current self-serving ecosystem- away from commercial galleries that profit off of art but do not invest in the communities said art is born of, public institutions that actually care for people, and gatekeepers that protect these interests.
We continue to call out pre-existing structures while imagining new ones, because these institutions are sitting on wealth that does not belong to them- wealth made off of violence against Black and Brown people and only hiring more people of color will not change that. How are these funds redistributed?
How can the British Museum for example not only returned looted art but also support the cultural institutions in those places affected by this thievery? The legacy of colonialism is still present in the imbalance of resources- course correction looks like reparations.
