Textiles

Patterns and textiles that are industrially produced exhibit a regularity and scale that is almost immediately recognizable. Industry has enabled traditional patterns from all over the world to be replicated, appropriated, and interpreted in new contexts. This has led to both a surge in new formal expression and the normalization of certain racist, patronizing, and incorrect interpretations of cultural motifs.
Duro Olowu at Cooper Hewitt (2022)
Patterns can have universal characteristics despite their origins, but what I find to be the most alluring about a pattern is its endless novelty. Patterns emerge in unexpected places through playful and sincere, articulated and spontaneous applications. They indicate a particular knowledge or savoir faire.
Duro Olowu at Cooper Hewitt (2022)
In the handmade, there is no obvious need for precision. Deviations in a pattern made through careful stitches, block prints, or handlooms connect you with the humanity of the artist or designer. They are lie little messages, made intentionally or incidentally, in a craft language.
