This working group invites a group of internationally renowned artist filmmakers working at the intersection of documentary and fiction to share their innovative and experimental approaches to embedding research within a screenplay. Together we will actively reflect on the vision of different filmmakers in crafting films drawn from life and the ethics of gathering stories.
Weekly meetings organised around the themes below will be a mix of talks, screenings, workshops and group discussion. We will consider how these approaches might influence the way we think about producing fiction and subverting documentary filmmaking.
I begun researching scholarly contributions: feminist methodologies and the problematics of interviews, the nature of ‘secrets and silence’ on the part of the researcher. Audio recordings then become the basis for editing, workshopping and experimenting with elements such as arrangement, speech, musical scores; and interplay with other elements of my studio practice such as writing, drawing, video, performance towards podcasting, exhibitions and live events.
