Experimenting with the effects of electricity on gases enclosed in otherwise evacuated tubes, he discovered ghostly effects similar to the flashing, smoky lights he had witnessed at many séances. Crookes thought he had found another way to communicate with the dead; what he had actually discovered was the phosphorescent effect that cathode rays have on certain materials in a vacuum tube—a discovery that would eventually conjure up those rather vacuous ghosts that came to flit across television tubes for over half a century.
