when you tell Mario to step to the left by moving a joystick, this
initiates a small delightful narrative: Mario comes across a hill;
he starts climbing the hill; the hill turns out to be too steep;
Mario slides back onto the ground; Mario gets up, all shaking.
None of these actions required anything from us; all we had to
do is just to move the joystick once. The computer program amplifies our single action, expanding it into a narrative sequence.49
MMORPG as technology upholding large scale myth making and lore-ing. Impossible probability of current social media environments to provide a post culture relationship with identity in the way that previous and current “MMORPGs” allow for. What do these MMORPGs do differently? Alternate value metrics that transcend ones identity. Possible visual and bodily movement cues (musculature behind complex move sets that enable the individual to move beyond even the designed movement/ability sets).
Social media companies even describe this communication as an act of war. They track metrics of “engagement.” Engagement is the point when hostile parties are forced into conflict: a military engagement. Or else it is an obligation: a marital engagement.
