The Strassel Farm Artist Residency is a land-based residency program at the foothills of the Coast Range in Tillamook County, Oregon. Selected as artist in residence for 2019, I spent several weeks getting to know the site through spending time with neighbors, walking the property, and through researching the site’s cultural use, history of ownership, and local ecology. I became interested in the central question of “what is it to be a visitor of the land?” The project became a collaborative effort. I worked with Durbin Dorsch—an eleven-year-old guest of the property—to develop a series of written instructions to help future visitors understand the property and its history. Durbin and I jointly led a tour of the property, including her “How to Make a Walking Stick” score, which offers a quiet, intentional, and meditative experience of the land. The project includes an artist’s book.
