The history and origin of my family is not well known. My family is of Eastern European Jewish descent, but I have no direct connection to the history or culture of my ancestors. Inspired by a workshop with Charlies Eisenstein, I became interested in the possibility of creating a deeper connection to the past through imaginative time travel. Offered as a workshop, this project pairs participants to interview each other while roleplaying a distant ancestor. The exercise begins with a series of mundane questions about their everyday lives such as “what did you eat for dinner?”, and “what were the sounds you heard outside when waking up?” As the workshop progresses participants delve deeper, naming and drawing these imagined relatives. The exercise culminates with a piece of imagined wisdom conjured from the distant past. The project includes a collection of writing and drawings, an artist’s book, and research images.
