Characteristics of a futurist. Believes in transdisciplinary approaches and solutions to complex systems that are seen as challenges in future.
Can complexity be solved by a return to minimalism or pre-modern conditions? Or do futurists believe that complex systems require excess or excessive solutions (material or epistemic). I wonder whether a futurist aesthetic is oppositional to something like a mid-century aesthetic. Futurists seem to acknowledge the messiness to come, but I wonder whether the solutions have to be as messy or excessive. I want a bed to be a bed. Or a phone to be a phone. But conditions are such that both exceed their original function. But if a phone were to be a phone again, wouldn’t that solve some of the challenges we are facing today and will face in the future? A less distracted and overwhelmed population, for example.
