We are committed to the idea that study is what you do with other people. It’s talking and walking around with other people, working, dancing, suffering, some irreducible convergence of all three, held under the name of speculative practice. The notion of a rehearsal—being in a kind of workshop, playing in a band, in a jam session, or old men sitting on a porch, or people working together in a factory—there are these various modes of activity. The point of calling it “study” is to mark that the incessant and irreversible intellectuality of these activities is already present.

Free University Brighton (FUB) was set up in October 2012 by Ali Ghanimi as a response to the privatisation of Higher and Further Education and cuts to the adult education sector. Intended to provide free education that is accessible to everyone regardless of their ability to pay, FUB is a kind of one-stop-shop for free education, bringing together the range of free classes already running in Brighton, with new events determined by what participants want to learn. The learning takes place in various locations throughout the city, including libraries, community centres and cafes. FUB is driven by a principle of knowledge and skills sharing, just like the Free University movements of the 1960s. Although Ali coordinates FUB, its driving force is the contributions of the participants who learn and share concurrently through suggesting classes for the future and providing experiences to inspire other participants. Classes themselves are also enormously varied, including at any one time, family history workshops, how to use free software, and events discussing austerity and the alternatives in a public way. This range of different learning opportunities reflects the Free University Movement’s commitment to bring experience into the practice of teaching, dismantling the idea that some experiences are more valid as teaching tools than others.
