What are we really talking about when we're talking about "default systems design"? most likely, just a set of empty aesthetic signifiers that come from designers using automated tools readily available, easy to manipulate into designs that are both sufficiently marketable in both form and efficiency (low-labor, low-investment, low-risk input, high-speed and high-profit output) to keep up with the demand required to stay afloat in late capitalism. they're also useful to brands that embrace post-authentic normcore, achieving transparency and trustworthiness thru a an apparent stripping-away of "design" (which of course is an oxymoron), a complicity with the commodification of everything (anti-hipster) and reframing of nature as marketplace

The decreasing value of authenticity in favor of the efficiency and replicability of the Premium Generic puts new graphic designers in a weird place, left wondering where to apply the originality and creativity that was valued in design school but the job market doesn’t seem to have room for.
Can we come up with our own normcore strategies not only to ameliorate our own lack of agency, but to imagine a post-authentic graphic design where our “radical creativity” is in service to social and political progress, instead of just consumer capitalism?
