In this project, artists Klaus Schafler and Marc Ganzglass and philosopher Dieter Plankl use the premise of a fictive para-normal event, a collectively witnessed Ufo encounter, to investigate the very real Austrian-Hungarian border at Andau, site of the 1956 exodus of Hungarian refugees, the fall of communism in 1989, and a locus of the 2015 migrant crisis. The project takes shape as a series of cinematic images depicting the border as a place of unexplained phenomena and fractured narratives. These images form the basis of a libretto, and performative lecture combining historical facts and science fiction to re-examine the border-zone and its place in cultural memory.
This project was included in the exhibition A Door Opens That Allows for Facts and Apparitions to Mix Together, at FLUC in Vienna in 2019, curated by Schafler and Ganzglass. See FLUC poster for details.
