Fertilizer is roughly 1/3 of the cost of growing food, uses a lot of oil. Many people want to more effectively re-engineer by inserting in the bacteria that live in the soil by inserting a gene cluster that enables the microbiome to fix nitrogen from the air and feed it to the plant, removing the need for fertilizer.
