Dance and movement is the incorporation of the body and the 'soma' creating a pure form of expression. I believe that even in the process of trying to decipher / incorporate a language, the movement is limited. For example, if I was totally free in a world of nothing, the addition of surface would allow me to walk, but it'd remove my total freedom.
INITIAL IDEAS - For the first part of my project I'm looking into the narratives weaved through movement and how these echoes can be retraced. I believe documentation of this manner detaches the importance of movement away from the body, and instead reveals the 'soma' / inner lived experience.
Reality is what my body hears, sees and touches as I move. This body is the shape that allows others to recognise me as myself. Yet everything my body does is merely a presented identifier allowing myself to be viewed by others. The thing that changes your body is the mind which is defined by your soma (inner experience), and this in turn shapes how you view and interact with the world around you. When I am by myself, I have no one to interact with and through this removal my sense of self becomes undefined as it is through observing the movements of others I may find and recognise myself. Yet my soma is aware of this and is restrained by how I am perceived by others. But in the presence of others you can design yourself as an individual, allowing a method of communication and expression through this movement, where the body acts as a physical apparatus which allows your soma to be expressed and interpreted.
