People can love you back; stuff never will.

“The glory of acquisition starts to dim with use, eventually changing to boredom as the item no longer elicits even a bit of excitement. This is the pattern of everything in our lives. No matter how much we wish for something, over time it becomes a normal part of our lives, and then a tired old item that bores us, even though we did actually get our wish. And we end up being unhappy.”

"People have a need to put their hands on tools and to make things. We need this in order to feel whole. Long ago we learned to think by using out hands, not the other way around." As our species evolved, we did so as beings that experience and manipulate the world around us. We are orders of magnitude better at doing this than any other animal, and this is true due to complex structures that evolved in our brains to support this ability.

"In a culture where screens replace craft... Crawford argues, people lose the outlet for self worth established through unambiguous demonstrations of skill."

Solitude is "about what's happening in your brain, not the environment around you." Thus it is "a subjective state in which your mind is free from input from other minds."

"Convenience just speeds you up." I guess I too have gotten conned into thinking that the convenience machines give us will free up a lot of my time, and then I can use that time to slow down or something. Tools, I consider, are never neutral. Whether it;s a hammer or a computer, a tool affects the way you think and behave, and sometimes even your values. Maybe convenience is just a faster conveyer belt and it hoodwinks me into thinking I can cram a lot more into my already crammed days.
