Awareness of users is irrelevant. We should stop blaming each other for this mess. You are not complicit because you’re still on Instagram. Let’s instead open the debate how the platform logic itself can be dismantled and how we can build alternatives that are local and meaningful and within the realm of our control.
Road surface markings are used on paved roadways to provide guidance and information to drivers and pedestrians. Uniformity of the markings is an important factor in minimizing confusion and uncertainty about their meaning, and efforts exist to standardize such markings across borders. However, countries and areas categorize and specify road surface markings in different ways — white lines are called white lines mechanical, non-mechanical, or temporary. They can be used to delineate traffic lanes, inform motorists and pedestrians or serve as noise generators when run across a road, or attempt to wake a sleeping driver when installed in the shoulders of a road. Road surface marking can also indicate regulation for parking and stopping.
The Managed Heart: The Commercialization of Human Feeling (1983), Arlie Russell Hochschild shows how ‘female’ labour in particular – nursing, flight attending, bank telling, waitressing – demands not only the performance of an expert convenience, but an additional emotional work of making customers feel like the employee (and the company by proxy) truly cares about their predicament, not just in transactional terms, but on a human one-to-one level, 117 times per hour.
The enforcement of that emotional performance is also a managerial responsibility: What does it say about someone who just does the bare minimum? Don’t you really love your job? Why weren’t you at the mindfulness workshop?
An advanced AI will observe that empathetic species, like dolphins and pandas, receive stronger protection against extinction than more ecologically crucial species that cannot smile. Is this why interim AIs, such as ‘assistants’ Cortana, Alexa and Siri have default ‘female’ voices instead of the deep tone of the creepily calm/passive aggressive HAL 9000?
Many of these technologies, like Predata’s, will be unfamiliar and unproven. Predata’s financial backing came from a consortium of VC firms and private investors, including the Dallas-based hedge fund manager Kyle Bass. Bass is a name in the financial industry, best known for being a “China bear” boldly forecasting the coming collapse of China’s high-growth global expansion. His investment carried more than mere monetary value; it signaled that Predata was taken seriously among people with power.
A flowchart is a powerful business tool. With proper design and construction, it communicates the steps in a process very effectively and efficiently.
we also observe that many such design practices will use childlike stylistic elements in the demonstration of the proposal or project: bright primary colours, ukulele pop, crayon fonts, children’s handprints, and the over-determined participation of now-again-infantile senior citizen stakeholders.
If we regard the artwork as an object, Harman’s theory offers a justification for a belief in the autonomous, inherent reality of the artwork. Its unique quality can neither be fully explained by the process of production, nor can it rely on its relation to the beholder: “At issue is the independence of artworks not only from their social and political surroundings, their physical settings or their commercial exchange value, but from any other object whatsoever.” In addition, the object takes the place formerly occupied by the genius—an individual possessed by an inherent talent or ability that is not subject to educational efforts but naturally inborn, and for this reason someone who is self-reliant and free of outward relations.
There’s too much content that appears different but is the same. Too many identities are available to us. Too many manias. Too many hysterias. Examine nearly any aspect of society and you can see it’s gone too far. The reason so many flavours of Oreos are invented, according to the cookie’s brand director, is that this overabundance of choice reminds us of and drives us back to the original. It reminds us of how much we like the old Oreo, the Platonic ideal of the Oreos of childhood, the Proustian Oreo with the glass of cold milk. When there’s too much of everything however, at some point the original is lost, the memory is lost, and all that remains are faded, flat, hollowed-out derivatives.
“What the vest allows the robots to do is detect the human from farther away and smartly update its travel plan to steer clear without the need for the associate to explicitly mark out those zones,”
Value, in an economic sense, is theoretically created by new things based on new ideas. But when the material basis for these new things is missing or actively deteriorating and profits must be made, what is there to be done? Retreat to the immaterial and work with what already exists: meaning.
Meaning is always readily available to be repeated, remixed, and/or cannibalized in service of creating the sensation of the new.
