I began to understand why Asian dramas are so popular: While Asians are often relegated to bit and stock roles in American television, these shows put Asians at the heart of the action, participating in the full spectrum of human drama.
Planning is much more than marking a target and working your way backwards. Planning is about expanding your options, remember? it’s collecting data, making predictions, branching over different realizations of those predictions and speculating about resources that could help. Planning is as much about what not to do as it is about what to do. Planning is about cramming up as many possible futures into plan which tries to narrow these futures into one future. Planning is fan-out where the plan is fan-in.
“When you wake up, you have this gift of a blank brain. You could fill it with anything. But for most of us, we have this kind of panic. Instead of wondering what should I do, we wonder what did I miss. It’s almost like our unconsciousness is a kind of failure and we can’t believe we’ve been offline for eight hours,”
"I don't know what I ate, but I felt immensely better after the first mouthful. It occurred to me that my vision of the fig tree and all the fat figs that withered and fell to earth might well have arisen from the profound void of an empty stomach."
When horoscopes only reinforce comfort, when they discourage people to seek social change, and when they prioritize niceness over discomfort—that’s when horoscopes lend themselves well to fascism. These types of horoscopes are a bit tongue in cheek. They like to make their readers feel that astrology is not a tool for mutual engagement but that astrology is an esoteric thing that will give them an advantage over everyone else. These types of horoscopes assure. They distribute answers because they believe that there are right answers. They see astrology as a top down power dynamic where learned people give answers to unenlightened people. They remember the first part of astrology’s adage (so above, so below) but forgot the second (so below, so above).
Why the obsession with Virgos? I asked Felicia Jiang, who runs the popular Chinese astrology website NoDoor.com. “Virgos are perfectionists, so they’ll often criticize other people,” she said. “It’s easy to notice, and easy to exaggerate.” Jiang pointed out that, as with all signs, Virgos’ weaknesses are also their strengths. Their attention to detail, while potentially irritating, actually makes them excellent workers, she said: More than half of the 19 employees at NoDoor.com are Virgos.
As the discussion progressed, other people pointed out that Venus has always been a controversial planet because it is one of the only femme planets (the Moon is also femme but actually began as male). As a representation of femininity, Venus is protected symbolically only within narratives that promote patriarchal violence. Venus actually functions as scapegoat and those with femininity are often seen to perpetuate classist behaviors that validate a capitalism in which they are not winners. Femmes are seen to carry bad materialism (consumerism, appetite, superficiality) while masculine people are seen to carry good materialism (land, tool, factories).
"Choosing your partner is like choosing a painting. You don't choose the best-looking one, you choose the one that makes you feel something"
It didn’t matter that most of these cuisines were already perfect and had no need to operate beyond their existing altitude (and that in many restaurants, beyond the capitols of taste, they didn’t). The point of these exercises in digestive manipulation was to promise the diner something more while delivering, on the plate, an experience at once less satisfying and more expensive than the original. In New York, places like Momofuku, Pok Pok, and Mission Chinese Food were at the vanguard of a new generation of supercharged “ethnic” restaurants. Their success did not, however, represent a victory for the subaltern, or some dramatic turning of the historical-culinary tables, but a recolonization—another way, ultimately, of pining for the past.
Between the acting of a dreadful thing
And the first motion, all the interim is
Like a phantasm or a hideous dream.
The genius and the mortal instruments
Are then in council, and the state of a man,
Like to a little kingdom, suffers then
The nature of an insurrection.
The Reality Proximity Principle: Other things being equal, those closer to a reality will think faster and better about it.
