An historically transmitted pattern of meanings embodied in symbols, a system of inherited conceptions expressed in symbolic forms by means of which men communicate, perpetuate, and develop their knowledge about and attitudes toward life.”
The space we call culture includes all the things we do that we don’t have to do, and their cultural ‘meaning’ resides in the stylistic aspects of them. Style is the name for the way in which something is done- a way chosen not for ‘functional’ reasons (as easier, more efficient or some such) but for a type of aesthetic satisfaction (nicer, cooler, more acceptable, less acceptable).
Attainment of consciousness is culture in the broadest sense, and self-knowledge is therefore the heart and essence of this process.
The most common response to failed individualism, however, is to get others to pay for your comforts. This is called culture.
