All there has ever been is surface. Surface on surface on surface on surface. A puncture, a wound, a hole does not expose something 'inside' or 'beneath' or 'below.' Instead, it creates another surface, one a little further down, but a surface nonetheless. You don't stand 'in' a hole, you stand 'on' one.
